Affordable Housing: A Vital Conversation

July 27th, 2023|News and Events|

On Monday June 5th, PDCF co-hosted a Vital Conversation with Building Lanark Affordable Housing (BLAH!), which is organized through The Table Community Food Centre. About 30 people gathered at St Paul’s United Church to hear about options that can make housing more accessible and community-focused.

Terrilee Kelford, of Cornerstone Landing Youth Services, highlighted the growing issue of youth homelessness in Lanark County. She noted that some young people, many of whom are no longer safe or welcome to live at home, find themselves either “couch-surfing” or living “rough” which means building makeshift shelters in the bush. Tiny Homes could be one solution to the lack of affordable housing for youth but, across the country, antiquated municipal bylaws and regulations make it difficult to build the homes. She is hoping that as more and more people begin to see the value of tiny homes, laws will be changed to make them feasible.

Noelle Reeve, planner with Tay Valley Township, introduced the concept of co-housing. Co-housing allows people to live in their own, self-contained and affordable units while benefitting from collective services and spaces. This is a particularly good model for seniors who may want to share costs for things like transportation, healthcare services, and home maintenance. It also gives residents the opportunity to gather for meals and socialize in shared spaces, while still maintaining their independence.

Marla McKenna, who has studied co-operative housing, explained that this model, which has many forms, can allow people to rent units which are affordable. Co-op is not a profit-making enterprise so costs are below market indicators. Members of a housing co-op share in decision-making and sometimes maintenance of the building. As a bonus, a culture of community is normally fostered through regular events and gatherings.

After the presentation, participants got a chance to meet in small groups and discuss ways that they could help see these affordable options developed in Lanark County. Everyone recognized that affordable housing is a vital issue and needs to be addressed.
